Who I am:
I have been married since 2004 to Alicia Rowntree, whom I met in Scotland on a study abroad trip. We have four kids: Anna, Hudson, William, and Molly. I love to think deeply, read widely, and laugh heartily. Hobbies include riding my motorcycle, playing the djembe, and sharpening my Spanish with native speakers. I pastored at Wellspring Church in Texas for 17 years. I was the Senior Pastor for 10 of those years. I also host a Theology podcast called Remnant Radio, and I'm working on a book about Revelation.

What I do:
No matter where I served, I have consistently been used by God as a teacher, a pastor, and a leader. As a teacher, I love to study God's Word and bring it to life in a way that displays God's beauty. As a pastor, my heart beats for the sheep--to lay my life down for them, every day. As a leader, God has gifted me to envision a better tomorrow and invite people on a journey to discover it.

Besides these things, I might add that God has given me considerable experience in leading a "Word and Spirit" church, and I am excited to help Bridgeway become, more and more, an example of what that looks like for churches around the world.

What God did:
Before I was born again, I thought God was distant and disinterested. Truthfully, I wanted him to be. If life was a party, God was a Cosmic Party Pooper--or so I thought.

At the age of 17, a drinking buddy invited me to church, where I encountered the Holy Spirit for the first time. Far from being distant, God was delightfully close and deeply interested in the way I live my life. I thought in my head, "God is so much better than everything else I've been living for, I want to live for Him for the rest of my life!"

Now I know that God is not a killjoy, but rather, He was killed for our joy. Three days later, He rose again to be closer than my own skin--to live inside my heart. It took that experience for me to realize that the nearness of God is a good thing--the best thing--that can happen to us. That's why I have dedicated my life to growing in friendship with Him and helping others do the same.
